Genetics and plant breeding of Andropogon gayanus

Allogamous reproductive behavior and the demonstrated existence of ample genetic variation for a number of agronomic traits in Andropogon gayanus suggest a substantial potential for genetic manipulation of the species. Possible breeding objectives are considered and appropriate breeding methods discussed. Three ongoing A. gayanus breeding projects are briefly described. It appears that the major limitation to successful A. gayanus breeding programs lies in the clear definition of relevant breeding objectives and in the development of simple, efficient, and reliable evaluation methodology.
