Finance and rural development in West Africa

The debate on the resurgence of rural development in West Africa underscores the key role of finance at the microeconomic level. The available evidence on the functioning of agricultural production units, and on the economics of rural households, highlights the importance of financial constraints on their ability to improve technically and economically whilst, on the other hand, access to financial services by rural households is extremely limited. In addition, the institutional financial sector is often subject to the consequences of structural adjustment measures. This raises the importance of the possibilities offered by the traditional informal sector and also the multitude of local initiatives aimed at replacing it. Finance and rural development in West Africa is the title of the proceedings from the seminar on the subject held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso which was a review of the recent and on-going initiatives, pilot projects and experiments in rural finance. CTA was one of three partners who gave financial support to the seminar.
