African Livestock Research is a quarterly journal produced by the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and replaces the now discontinued ILCA Bulletin. Domestic livestock in Africa are currently the focus of much attention as an important component of subsistence farming systems; as significant real or potential sources of cash income for small-scale farmers in Africa; and as factors in the continuing debate over sustainable and ecologically sound food production systems. The aims of the journal are to disseminate the results of strategic, basic and applied research that relates to livestock and mixed crop-livestock systems in Africa, irrespective of where such research is conducted and to promote communication among all scientists whose work is relevant to irnproving and increasing livestock production in Africa. African Livestock Research is available free of charge to libraries of NARS within Africa. The annual subscription rates for others (including airmail postage) are: NARS scientists US$20; other individuals US$75; non-NARS libraries US$120 (or an an exchange basis). African Livestock Research, ILCA PO Box 5689, Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA Hands On is a quarterly news-letter published by the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Africa (FSDA), which is:a charitable trust aimed at promoting the formation and functioning of dynamic, self-sustaining communities through effective networking. 'It is essential that Africa realizes that continued reliance on outside assistance directly contradicts the notions of sustainabilty and selfsufficiency. We do not have to wait for development to come to us. It is an activity that must start with the individual, be refined through trial and error and disseminated by proven success' runs a pagraph in the editoria1 of the first issue (March 1992) which sums up the philosopy and aims of the newsletter.
