Asking the right questions

Getting the right person, with the right attitudes, in the right place is nowhere more important than in the selection and deployment of a volunteer to work in the renewable natural resources sector. Based on their considerable practical experience, the British Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) has prepared Agriculture and natural resources: a manual for development workers. It provides guidelines to help the development worker assess the nature of the job for which assistance has been requested, and to identify the specific qualities and skills needed. It does not attempt to argue the case for particular approaches to agricultural development but it does attempt to inject an element of realism at the job evaluation stage. The main part of the manual sets out key questions which should be asked; firstly those of a general nature of wide relevance to a range of agricultural and natural resources situations and, secondly, more specific questions focussed on individual skill categories and job types. The manual, which is printed on looseleaf A5 sheets set into a robust ringbinder, includes several pages of useful addresses.
