Test-tube plantains
Until now, within the genus Musa, only dessert bananas have been suitable for large-scale in vitro reproduction, but soon plantains will also be produced by this method. At present, research in France is being carried out on the choice of varieties suitable for this means of reproduction: they must crop heavily and regularly which 'traditional' bananas do not - and the fruit must be acceptable to consumers. These in vitro seedlings will be rigorously checked for disease and then sent to Africa to start banana nurseries. Several African countries have plans to install large plantain plantations to meet growing demands, which small-scale village cultivation cannot do.
