Изменчивость формы отолитов балтийского шпрота

The shape of 66 Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus) otoliths from commercial catches in ICES Subdivisions 25-29, and 32 in 1981-1987 have been studied. Samples were examined under scanning electron microscope and original system for automated image analysis was used. Mathematical analysis of the otoliths shapes (contours) was based on the Fourier's expansions. To obtain the required analysis sensibility, the amplitude and harmonics of Fourier's series should be taken into account. The problem of automated otoliths shape typification on the basis of correlation analysis has been solved. It has been established that variability of the right otolith contours was obviously higher than of the left ones and their shape variability was increasing with age. The most typical shape is in the 1-year-old sprat otoliths.
