Posibilidades de pesca comercial y manejo del cobo (Strombus gigas) en la cayería de las Doce Leguas, Parque Pacional Jardines de la Reina

Monitoring results on the abundante of queen conch (Strombus gigas) are presented. Field Works were done in the comercial fishing ground at Jardines de la Reina Nacional Park, south-east region of the Cuban shelf. Means a protected area under control of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Enviroment, and its local authorities. According to the fishery importance of this zone for the conch, a joint research assessment were done, aim to evaluate the actual possibilities for a sustainable commercial operation, following an ensure scope. By the abundance estimation observed is allowed a MSY of 119 metric tons (living weight), from October 2008 until April 2009. From obtained results, it was agree a catch license for the fishery enterprise of Camaguey (EPISUR). Monitoring of the area must be done again in June 2009. The authors criteria is that the local conch population can support this proposal. The factors considered were the population density, age composition, closed season, recruitment, size composition, and the needed sustainable fishing management suggested.
