The Nigerian fisheries and the attainment of the millennium goals: keynote address

The keynote address concentrated on the roles Nigerian fisheries could play in the attainment of the Millennium development goals. The concept of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was defined as ranging from halving the extreme poverty to halving the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education for all by the year 2015. The paper discussed the subject matter under the followng topics. Fisheries and the eradicaton of extreme poverty and hunger. Fisheries and the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment. Fisheries and reduction in child mortality and improvement in maternal health. Fisheries and the combat of HIV/AIDS, maleria and vother diseases. In conclusion, the paper called for public-private partnership to achieve the mellennium development goals.
