Genetic diversity of the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) breeders from the broodstocks on the fish farms of the Azov and Black Sea Basin

Genetic diversity of the Russian sturgeon breeders from the broodstocks at the fish farms of the Azov-Don and Azov-Kuban Branches of FSBI “Glavrybvod” has been studied in comparison with the data, collected from the fish in a natural population. During this research, the changes in allelic profile and allele frequencies in the Russian sturgeon breeders were recorded. Appearance and disappearance of rare alleles (<5 % frequency) both at the edges and within distributions do not display any specific trend and are preconditioned by genetic drift (random fluctuations) in the samples with low effective abundance. Along with this, the tendency for increase in the percentage of “weak” heterozygotes (AAAB) as a result of spontaneous formation of a broodstock has been identified. The breeders from a broodstock, as opposed to the fish from the natural population, show the deficit of heterozygotes, which, in the future, can negatively affect the quality of released juveniles.
