Generación y uso de biomasa en plantas de beneficio de palma de aceite en Colombia.

Agro-industrial sectors are characterized by the generation of biomass in large quantities. The milling process of the oil palm fruit in Colombia is presented as one of the most important generators of biomass per cultivated hectare compared with other oil and bio-energy type crops. The main wastes generated in palm oil mills are: empty fruit bunches, fibers, shell, and liquid effluents. This article presents the results obtained during the diagnosis of generation and use of oil palm biomass in Colombia, conducted in 29 mills that process the 76.7% (2'858.868 ton) of the fruit produced national wide in 2008. These companies are located in the Central, Northern and Eastern Region, where were researched about processed fruit, quantities, current uses, availability and cost of the residual biomass generated by the mills. The results show that there is more than 600,000 tons/year of biomass available to formulate new alternatives of uses.
