Opciones de manejo de la Pudrición del cogollo (PC) de la Palma de aceite en áreas de baja incidencia de la enfermedad.

As a result of the research activities on alternatives for the handling of the bud rot (PC for its name in Spanish) of the oil palm, there are several recommendations. The process is started with the early diagnosis of the disease, using a severity scale, based on the symptoms in the younger spear leaf with more than 30 cm in length, developed for nursery palms. In older palms there is evaluated the damage of the tips of some leaflets in the younger leaf (bite), that is a good indicator in palms of any age, that promote the need to inspect the spears, to confirm the diagnosis, when this symptoms are observed. As a reaction to the presence of early stages of PC, it is recommended the elimination of the affected tissue and in more advanced cases, the eradication of the diseased palm. The elimination of the affected tissue is complemented with the treatment with an insecticide and a mixture of fungicides and bactericides applied to the exposed tissue, the first to prevent the attack of insects and the last to protect against microorganisms that might find the opportunity to penetrate throughout the wounds produced. It is necessary to follow up the development of the treated palms to verify the emission of new healthy leaves and to repeat the treatment when needed. Besides there is a spray program of insecticide, bactericides and fungicides, to the base of the spear leaf of the treated palms and of the surrounding ones, to control different pathogens and insects associated with the bud rot. This work is complemented with the flaming of the areas exposed during the surgery, in cases in which this goes deeper in the bud area, to control the reproductive structures of different microorganisms.
