The world vegetable oils market is dominated by two leading products: soyabean oil, which is produced in the greatest volume, and palm oil, which is the most widely traded. World price trends are documented. A comparison is made of production costs in Asia and other regions. Cost competitiveness is shown to be the key behind palm oil's rapid growth worldwide. In addition health concerns in high income countries have created a premium for oils low in saturated fats. The underlying trends in the realprices of oilseeds, oils and meals are strongly downwards. The cumulative production cost schedules for Asia and the rest of the world reveal the low costs and substantial market share of palm oil in Asia. Outside Asia soyabean oil is the most important and most cost competitive oil.
