Traditionelles Wissen der Bevölkerung zur Pflanzengesundheit in Hausgärten Calakmul, Mexiko Recurso electrónico

The inherited traditional knowledge of local inhabitants about pests and plant-diseases was investigated over a period from January until May 2010 in three villages settled within the Biosphere-Reserve Calakmul, Mexico. The path of investigations was set by semi-structured interviews amongst 40 peasant women and farmers. In addition free listings, inspection of local home-gardens, informal interviews as well as participial observation were considered for the relevant data file. It appears quite significant how the peasants are going to deal with pests and plant diseases; their approach is quite different between the three investigated villages depending highly upon their descent. Inhabitants of a village with mostly indigenous roots (Maya) do not consider them as a major danger to their garden harvests. On the other hand Mestizos living in the other two villages are taking a different point of view on pests and plant-diseases inasmuch they are looking at them as being the basic and most important cause of economical losses and consequently they are using chemical pesticides occasionally or even on a regular basis. It was discovered and is evident that in all three villages peasants do have little knowledge of botanically based preservatives against pests and plant diseases which have not been used traditionally unless these were suggested by agricultural advisors or published by means of locally held instructing courses. These substances are not widely being used in their home gardens. Numerous cultural methods which are being applied preventively and which are believed to strengthen plants against pests and other diseases are being used in all three villages. Nevertheless methods of preventive nature are dominating in all places investigated under the programme. Apart from the above some major old customs were discovered of which peasants strongly believe that there is some connection if applied and plants may stay healthier and strong.
