Leadership and social organization the integration of the Guatemalan refugees in Campeche, Mexico

This paper analyses the Guatemalan refugee leaders in the new context of the integration policy in Mexico. The study took place in the four Guatemalan refugee settlements located in the state of Campeche, one of several Mexican states where Guatemalan refugee settlements are found. The first part of the paper describes Guatemalan refugee settlements and Mexican neighbouring communities. This is followed by a brief review of local integration concerns. The third part deals with organizational changes related to the integration policy at the community and political levels. After describing the leaders in the context of integration, the paper presents in their own words, their reasons for wishing to stay in Mexico permanently. It concludes that leaders' skills and capacities for social organization, acquired during the period of settlement in Campeche, were crucial to face the new context of local integration that the Mexican government recently offered them.
