Current status of seed production of improved varieties of coffee in India :

Coffee is generally propagated by seeds. Central Coffee Research Institute has evolved a number of selections in arabica which possess moderate to high level of resistance to rust (Hemileia vastatrix), desirable bean grades and cup quality. The emphasis in robusta coffee has been to evolve selections with bold bean and neutral liquor quality. Seed plots for all the released selections are established in different zones. These are regularly inspected to mark off-type plants and convert them in desirable types by top-working. Irrigating the seed plots to induce blossom in advance of natural blossom has also been introduced to maintain seed purity. Methods for seed preparation has been standardized to obtain maximum germination and vigorous growth. Seed distribution in done through the network of Extension Offices located in all coffee growing areas. Seedling nurseries are encouraged especially in berry borer affected areas. Procedure for nursery certification has been standardized.
