Features of coffee production in Nigeria

Two main varieties of coffee (arabica and robusta) are produced in Nigeria in about thirty-six states. Of the total hectarage put to coffee originally in Nigeria, only about 20 per cent is currently effective. Most of the farmers are small scale farmers having between 0-4 hectares of land. The annual income of the farmer is very low (US 63-US 200) and the farmers are very old people who cannot do much physical work. The average yield of the farmers in Nigeria is very low (36.3 kg/ha-508.3 kg/ha) as a result of poor farm management, poor financial standing and low technical know how. The most appropriate farm size per farmer is estimated to be 5.0 ha for effective management. Average increase in production per year is estimate at about 7 percent. In conclusion, rehabilitation including replanting and proper extension services is recommended for improving the Nigerian coffee industry.
