Rearing of grubs of white stem-borer, Xylotrechus quadripes Chevr. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) on freshly cut stems of different species of coffee

White stem-borer, Xylotrechus quadripes Chevr. is a serious pest of Coffea arabica L. Screening of three species of coffee, Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner, C. excelsa Chev. and C. liberica Bull ex Hiern in comparison with C. arabica for the development of X. quadripes was studied by placing about for month old grubs of the pest in the grooves made in the cut stems. The per cent emergence of adults of the pest from the stems of C. arabica, C. canephora, C. excelsa and C. liberica was 72, 52, 20 and 28, respectively. Average number of eggs present in the female beetles emerged from the stems of C. arabica, C. canephora, C. excelsa and C. liberica was 86, 77.38, 33.67 and 30.75, respectively. Longevity among the beetles bred out from the different species of coffee stems was no significantly different. However, the fecundity and longevity of the beetles emerged from the different species of coffee cut stems were significantly different from that of natural population. The duration of emergence period of the pest from the cut stems of different species of coffee was also recorded.
