Consorciacao de seringueira e cafeeiro em fase terminal e o seu efeito na reducao do período de imaturidade do seringal

The decline in productivity and the eradication of extensive coffee plantation areas, in the region of Arenito Caiuá (Northwestern Paraná State), pose opportunities to productive, environmentally sustainable land use, through establishment of agroforestry systems involving perennial crops such as rubber trees. An experiment has been initiated, with 4 replicated plots, in wich rubber clones IAN 873 (Amazonian) and GT 1 (Asiatic) were planted (April, 1991) at 8,0 x 2,5 m spacing between the rows of a 10-year old coffee plantation (cv. Catuaí Amarelo) with 4,9 m x 1,5 m spacing, formerly scheduled to be removed. Results from the first 2 years have shown rubber growth rates (height, stem diameter, bark thickness) nearly twofold greater in the rubber-coffee system when compared to pure rubber planting, important conditions to anticipate tapping commencement and to improve rubber productivity. Coffee productivity also have been improved. Economic analysis have also indicated better performance of the rubber-coffee system, which appears to hold interesting potential to be established in decaying coffee and/or in eradication areas of Paraná State.
