A dual energy-biomass dryer as an alternative for Arabica coffee processing

Indonesian Government planned to convert some existing Robusta coffee plantations to Arabica coffee ones particularly in highland areas are not favourable for drying Arabica cherries by natural sun drying. An effort has therefore been carried out to design and assess a dryer which was provided by dual heat energy sources, i.e, a 10 m2 of forced convection type solar collector and a biomass furnace. The drying chamber was a tunnel-like type with 1 m in width and 10 m in length and was able to accommodate 200 kg of wet coffee cherries. The collector was equipped with a 900 m exponente 3/h capacity of centrifugal AC blower. The trial showed that the dryer performed sufficiently even during cloudy and rainy days. The average time required for drying fresh coffee cherries to a marketable moisture content ranged between 76 to 80 hours, whereas coffee cherries in the sun drying floor was only 45 percent. The average insolation was about 2.5 - 3.0 Kw-h/m2 and firewood consumption was 0.5 kg/kg dried product.
