Catimor resistance to coffee leaf rust and virulence of physiological races of Hemileia vastatrix :

Forty nine progenies of Catimor and the check treatment Catuaí Vermelho LCH 2077-2-4-44 were inoculated, for disease evaluation, with Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Br. races II, VII, X, XV, XVI, XXIII, XXIV and XXXI. Five uniform seedlings for each progeny were inoculated at the age of six months. Six evaluations were done at seven day intervals for each race and group of progenies, from the 21st to 56th days after inoculation. A degree scale was used for the evaluation of each type of reaction. The different disease levels, obtained from plants of each progeny, indicate that a great variation of reactions exists between plants of the same progeny. However, some progenies showed little variation (for example, the UFV 6567, UFV 6542 and UFV 6543 progenies in relation to race XV). In those cases where the heterogeneity was great, some progenies such as UFV 6489, in relation to the races VII and X and UFV 6616 in relation to the race XXIII, showed this characteristic to such a degree that they were classified as susceptible. This indicates that the studied population, although resistant, can present plants susceptible to the races tested.
