Nemátodes do cafeeiro na República de Sao Tomé e Principe e seleccao de cultivares resistentes

The present paper reports part of the results of a joint research project carried out in the framework of the European Union Research Programme and involving researchers from four countries: Portugal, Spain, Italy and Sao Tomé and Principe. Surveys were made of plant-parasitic nematodes on coffee (Coffea arabica, C. canephora and C. liberica) in the main growing areas of Sao Tomé and Principe. Thirty-one soil and/or root samples were studied. Root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. were found in fourteen samples; in 50 percent of these more than 50 percent of the roots were heavily galled. Morphological and morphometrical studies, including SEM observations, detected the presence of Meloidogyne megadora and M. javanica, in five and three samples, respectively. Esterase phenotype obtained by isoelectric focusing of M. javanica females differed from data for that species in earlier studies. Esterase and malate dehydrogenase phenotypes of M. megadora females were distinguishable from all other species already studied. This is the first report of the two species from Sao Tomé and Príncipe. Besides root-knot nematodes, Trophotylenchulus and Helicotylenchus were the most widespread nematodes. Rotylenchulus reniformis was found in one sample. Responses of several progenies of coffee to four populations of Meloidogyne were evaluated under glasshouse conditions. M. javanica did not reproduce in all progenies tested. M. hapla failed to reproduce in nine progenies but reproduced poorly in three, with a reproduction factor less than 1; six progenies were hypersusceptible. M. megadora did not reproduce in five progenies of the coffee plants tested; two being hypersusceptible; and reproduced in C. arabica cv. Catuaí amarelo (16919), with a reproduction factor higher than 1.
