Ploidy and resistance of Coffea arabica and related species to coffee rust :

Excluding Coffea arabica, the other known coffee species are diploid (2n = 22). Diploid and colchicine-treated tetraploid and hexaploid plants of different species of Coffea were evaluated for resistance to coffee rust. Three diploid Paracoffea species were also analysed. Some of the tetraploid coffee plants showed increased resistance to the pathogen compared to their diploid counterparts. The Paracoffea representatives were attacked by coffee rust, suggesting that they should be kept in the genus Coffea, coffee rust being an obligate parasite.
