Vegetative propagation of cultivar ruiru 11 by rooting softwood stem cuttings

A number of aspects of the Vegetative Propagation of the hybrid cultivar Ruiru 11 by means of rooting softwood stem cuttings were investigated. About 6.000 two year old trees of Ruiru 11 were pruned and pegged down in a horizontal position to serve as mother-trees for sucker harvesting at the CRS, Ruiru. Rooting of stem cuttings was rather difficult with less than 50 percentage take. Little success was obtained from use of rooting hormones and further work recommended. Whole single node cuttings produced roots almost equally well as split single node cuttings. The effect of the rooting media was significant. Information obtained from the work is being utilised to perfect large scale multiplication of Ruiru 11.
