Propagation and distribution of cultivar ruiru 11: a review

This paper reviews progress on the propagation of the Arabica coffee hybrid, cultivar Ruiru 11, which has been going on in Kenya since 1985. Hybrid seed production on the variety has been done manually through hand emasculation and pollination, and as a result, the annual demand for seed exceeds the production. Therefore the CRF introduced Vegetative Propagation of Ruiru 11 in 1990 and experiments also started at the same time on Tissue Culture Techniques for commercial propagation of the variety. The two methods are expected to supplement the current method of hybrid seed multiplication through artificial cross pollination. Aspects of yield and quality of the variety are also discussed.
