Coffee breeding and related evolutionary aspects

Breeding for high yields and for vigorous growth has been successfully applied to coffee. The coffee breeding program in Campinas, Brazil, began in 1933 with particular attention given to transferring short-stature alleles to the main C. arabica cultivar in order to make picking easier and more economical. Aspects considered in the breeding program are total yield, seed density, percentage of normal flat seeds, the weight relation between cherries and clean coffee and beverage quality. Research has been done on diseases and insect resistance as well as resistance to drought and low temperature. Tissue culture (in vitro) technique have been successfully applied to coffee improvement. Tables are given for genetic relationships among Eucoffea species and Coffea species that might have been involved in the origin of C. arabica. (ICO. Library Monthly Entries no. 80:15. 1987)
