Possibilités d'amelioration de l'espece cultivee Coffea canephora Pierre par hybridation interspecifique avec les cafeiers africains diploides: données cytogénétiques sur les hybrides F1

One way planned for improving C. canephora involves using the genetic resources of the genus. For this purpose, the cultivated species has been crossed with seven species with varying potentialities. Cytogenetic study of the diploid F1 hybrids has shown four types of situations: fertile with normal to subnormal meiotic behaviour; this is the case for crosses with C. congensis; moderately fertile, which is closely linked to the regularity of meiosis; this is the case for crosses with C. liberica and C. dewevrei; infertile to near-sterile, which is mostly connected with meiotic behaviour; this is the case for crosses with C. brevipes and, to a lesser extent, C. eugenioides; near sterile despite, in some cases, fairly regular meiosis; this is the case for crosses with C. racemosa and C. pseudozanguebariae. Only the C. canephora x C. congensis combination has, from the first hybrid generation, a fertility level compatible with the selection aims. To make use of the scope for improvement provided by the other interspecific combinations, a fertility restoration phase is essential. Under these conditions, the C. liberica x C. canephora hybrids seem to come second
