Susceptibility of 7 cultivars of Coffea arabica L. to Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville)

Field observations indicate that different cultivars of C. arabica show different grades of leafminer infestation. In a attempt to confirm those observations, I evaluated seven cultivars of C. arabica under greenhouse and sunlight coffee growe conditions. In the greenhouse, 10 plantules (cotyledon stage) were selected and planted in soil bags of 10 cm diameter. For observation the plantules were place in a complete randomized block design with five replicates per cultivar. To determined the infestation percentage per cultivar, I recorded the total number of leaves and mines. The percentage of infestation was recorded 1 month after the establishment of the experiment. A natural high infestation of the leafminer was obtained in the greenhouse, so no artificial inoculation was needed. The following tabulation shows the under greenhouse conditions cultivar "Pacas" had the highest leafminer infestation (97.3 percent), followed by Caturra 494 (94.6 percent), significant at the 1 percent level when compared with the lowest infestation percentage of cultivar Puerto Rico 401 (31.8 percent). A field experiment (1982-83) was carried out with a complete randomized block design with four replicates and five plants per replicate. The number of leaves and mines were recorded. Infestation percentage means were analyzed statistically and "t" test of significance was perfomed. In this experiment, it was impossible to determine significance according to the statical analysis. Nevertheless, Pacas cultivar showed the highest leafminer infestation percentage (81.2 percent) followed by Caturra 494 (62.5 percent). Puerto Rico 401 had the lowest percentage (31.2 percent) as shown in the following tabulation
