[Rapport] :

Among the results reported from laboratory, nursery, greenhouse and field studies on cultivars and breeding lines of Coffea arabica, the hybrid populations Icatu and Catimor and on C. canephora cv. Kouillou are the varietal differences in the effect of leaf age on lesion density (incomplete, race-specific resistance was high in young leaves in C. arabica, Icatu and Catimor, but was higher in adult leaves than in old or young leaves in Kouillou). Small but significant differences in lesion density and latency period were observed in breeding lines and accessions of C. arabica from Ethiopia. Differences in latency period, lesion density, sporulation lesion density and reaction type were observed among forms of Kouillou. In greenhouse studies, sporulating lesion density was the character which was best correlated with incidence of disease in the field. In C. arabica, Icatu and Kouillou, some instances were observed where the incomplete resistance was race-specific. The SH4 gene for resistance to Hemileia vastatrix in C. arabica gave incomplete protection when heterozygous
