Les prospections des cafeiers sauvages et leur mise en colection

The IFCC and ORSTOM have for several years now been expanding effort on surveying and collecting wild coffee trees to constitute "variability reservoirs" for the purposes of improvement. The object of the surveys was to make a brief examination of the coffee trees under natural conditions (ecology, populations, state of health) and specially taking samples of living plant material basically vegetative (propagation by grafting and cuttings). The experiment showed that the surveys required the collaboration of botanists, genetecists and phytopathologists. So far, surveys have been made in several countries (Ethiopia, Madagascar and neighbouring islands, Central Africa, Kenya) and these yields interesting material (C. arabica, Mascarocoffea, C. congensis, C. liberica, C. eugenioides, C. zanguebariae, etc.); the populations in Ivory Coast (C. canephora, C. humilis, C. liberica, C. stenophylla and two species of the general Paracoffea and Psilanthus) are being studied more extensively. The material collected and included in the living colletion may thus be used in the creation of new types of coffee trees
