Introducing Ruiru 11 to small-holders

In this paper the consequences of introducing a new coffee hybrid called Ruiru 11 to the smallholder are analysed. It is established that the farmers are very much interested and would like to start planting Ruiru 11 on a trial basis to find out what it is like. It is indicated, that the potential demand is very high in the first years, but it must be appreciated that unforeseen circumstances can prevent the farmer from doing as he indicated (eg lack of money, low crop productivity etc). Farmers clearly indicated, that they prefer to try out Ruiru 11 on a new "shamba" after which they want to wait 4-5 years to see how it performs. Many farmers indicate they prefer Ruiru 11 to the present varieties, even if it produces less. A strong preference for close spaced coffee, a possibility with the new hybrid, combined with the desire to expand the area under coffee will lead, on the longer term, to a considerable increase in production of coffee in Kenya. A drop in price must then be anticipated, unless the production can be controlled by limiting the area under coffee. If Ruiru 11 is as good as the breeders indicate farmers will eventually replace the present varieties by the hybrid
