A biometrical study of yield variation in some coffee progenies

The mean yield, the coefficient of variation for yield over years as well as between plants, the percentage of plants giving a average fruit yield of 3 kg and above and their percentage contribution to total yield of the progeny were used to differentiate 25 high yielding Coffea arabica and 34 high yielding C. canephora (robusta) progenies at a single location (Central Coffee Research Institute, India). Arabica progenies had, in general, lower variation for yield and lower mean yield than robusta. Clonal progenies in robusta obtained by rooted cuttings had lower plant to plant variation of mean yield and higher mean yield than seedling progenies of the same mother plants. Seven progenies each in arabica and robusta indicated as superior for all the parameters were suggested as suitable for multilocation trial
