Effect of chemical mutagens on coffee

Three mutagenic chemicals viz., deithyl sulphate (d ES), dimethyl sulphate (d MS) and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) were tried on coffee using three cultivars in C. arabica and one in C. canephora. Concentrations used were 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 percent aqueous solutions on dormant and activated seeds for 24, 48 and 72 h durations. In all the treatments, percentage of seed germination was reduced and abnormalities in growth of seedlings were noticed. The chemical action was severe on activated seeds. In C. canephora seedling abnormalities were not noticed but percentage germination was reduced
