Producing Ruiru 11 seedlings

The Coffee Research Foundation (CRF) will introduce a coffee hybrid in 1986 called Ruiru 11. This paper investigates whether this introduction can be done via the existing nurseries and what kind of improvements are required to bring the nurseries up to the required standards of management. It is shown that the management of the Co-operative and commercial nurseries at present is not all that good. Much basic knowledge about the crop performance is missing and inputs are rarely used in a systematic manner. However, it seems possible to improve the management by adequate training and supervision of the production process. If the input supply to the nursery can also be ensured, there is no reason why the existing nurseries cannot produce Ruiru 11 seedlings of good quality. Finally some guidelines are drawn up for the selection of the nurseries which are to produce Ruiru 11 as to ensure an equitable distribution of the hybrid
