Glyphosate (round-up 36 percent ai) low rate on annual weeds in Kenya coffee

Glyphosate (Round-up 36 percent a i) at low rates of application using Lumark AN 1.0 nozzle at low water volume was investigated at Coffee Research Station, Ruiru on annual weeds control. Application of Round-up at 0.5 and 1 l/ha at either 80 or 250 l of water respectively was administered. All the Round-up application rates controlled effectively the annual weeds sprayed while Paraquat (Gramoxone 20 ML) which was used as a standard failed to control Biden and Parthenium weed species which were among the major annual weeds at the site. It was concluded that Round-up can be used at 0.5-1 l/ha in 80-100 l of water using a low volume nozzle like Lumark AN 1.0 to control annual weeds in Kenya coffee compared to the traditional rate of 3 l/ha in 250 l water. This means a saving of more than 50 percent on the chemical and water
