Pollination in cultivars of Coffea arabica L

Coffea arabica and its tetraploid derivatives are autogamous but out-crossing as an effective means of stable fruitset and yields was recorded to an extent of 46.0 to 63.9 per cent. Differences in modes of pollinations and the consequent ovary retention and fruit set were not significant among the 10 cultivars studied and results are discussed in relation to the parents involved in the hybrids and their origin. C. arabica is therefore classified as and often self-pollinated crop. Isolation of seed blocks and recycling of the seed material of the older selections by strict self-pollination is suggested
