NPK fertilization of coffee trees growing at full sunlight on a red ferrallitic soil of Cuba
Sciences within 1978-1985 period. For this purpose, five field experiments were conducted with the following main objectives: a mid-term evaluation of P and K fertilization just at planting time; a study of N fertilizaton related to plant density and application of organic matter at planting time. Concerning the former objective, coffee trees were planted in 1978 whereas for the latter, they were planted over 1981-1982. It was proved that the residual effect from P and K fertilizers, at the rates of 150 and 450 kg/ha of P2O5 and K2O, respectively, can be used to assure an adequate plant growth and acumulative production of 40 t/ha of coffee cherries for three harvests, with regard to responsive soils to P and K fertilization, having early contents of 26 ppm of available P and 0.26 meq/100 g of exchangeable k. The significance on the deeper root-system zones (30 - 75 cm) was evident by the pattern of available P distribution on the profile, either for absorption processes or prediction. High plant densities increase no only yields but N fertilization efficacy, as it increases significantly the apparent recovery of N fertilizer by 30 per cent. The uptake of fertilizer N depends on timing, since it export from 15 to 20 per cent when applied in March and from 35 to 40 per cent when applied in June. Nitrogen recovered by coffee (per cent) is lower than the value estimated by the difference method. Basal-dressings of filter cake or manure produced more vigorous and fruitful plants, however, a longer period is necessary to perform a categoric economical analysis
