Results of investigation on coffee leaf rust in Vietnam :

The investigation on leaf rust Hemileia vastatrix in Vietnam started since 1961. The first work was carried out at the Tropical Crops Research Station in Tay Hieu in the North of Vietnam. Later on this work was continued at the Coffee Research Institute (Buon Me Thuot - Daklak) in the Western Highlands of South of Vietnam from 1978 up to now. The investigations included the following: Observation on the incidence and development of the disease under the influence of different environmental conditions, evaluation of resistance levels among different varieties of Arabica coffee and testing the efficacy of different fungicides in controlling coffee rust. The main results obtained over the years in both regions can be summarized as follows: 1) Observations of the incidence and development of the disease on two varieties of Arabica coffee, Typica and Caturra under conditions with shade and without shade, indicated that rust was more severe under shade condition. 2) In the course of selection for resistance to leaf rust, some types of Arabica coffee were observed in the collection with differing levels of resistance to this disease, from completely resistant to fully susceptible. 3) Copper fungicides such as copper-oxychloride and Bordeaux-mixture and some organic fungicides were found to be quite effective in controlling and preventing this disease, especially Sicarol and Bayleton
