Rhizosphere and rhizoplane microflora of coffee seedlings as influenced by collar rot and by seed pretreatment

Using the dilution plate technique it was found that the number of fungi, yeast and bacteria was higuer in the rhizosphere than in the non-rhizosphere and rhizoplane. The presence of Rhizoctonia solani, causal agent of collar rot, affected the rhizosphere and rhizoplane microflora. Pretreatment of seeds with carboxin and quintozene considerably reduced the fungal flora associated with the roots. R. solani was observed only in the rhizosphere and rhizoplane of untreated and collar rot infected seedlings. (Hort. Abst. 57(7):6076. 1987)
