Vegetative floral balance in coffee, 2: Effect of crop thinning on the growth of axillary vegetative shoots, extension of nodes, defoliation and fruit drop
Studies indicated that partial and full decropping (at pin head stage) resulted in vegetative growth in the bearing branches and decreased leaf and fruit drop. Of the two cultivars studied S.1934 showed better vegetative growth than Cioccie when the crop is retained and thus confirm the varietal difference observed earlier. Bearing branches suffered crop strain and non-bearing branches contributed little to overcome this localised strain. In addition to crop strain there seemed to be other causes also for leaf and fruit drop
