Observaciones comparativas de la roya del café en los hemisferios Oriental y Occidental :

Of coffee rusts Hemileia vastatrix is most widespread. It has about 25 races of which two are in the western hemisphere. Numerours mycological and ecological studies show this rust can develop in all main coffee growing area in Brazil; and as well in any other coffee growing area in any other part of the American tropics. Researches in both hemispheres clearly indicate wind currents could have brought spores to Brazil from Africa in from 5 or 7 to 15 days. Spores have been trapped in Brazil in several airplane flights at from 50 m., and between, to 1000 m. in altitude. Spores have also been trapped in the air at 150 km. distance from a diseased area. In Africa important spore dispersal was proved to be by water drops and by flying insects; it is also certain man has moved rusted seedlings for distances and increased disease spread in that manner. To understand coffee rust, statistical studies were made of data on the effects of temperatures and moisture on spore germinations. This resulted in an apparently reliable Equation. In Africa this so-called "Rayner Equation" when determined, confirms where coffee rust is severe, intermediate, and less serious. In Brazil such Equation studies in progress indicate there are areas that can be mapped out where occurrence of the rust disease will be high risk, medium risk, or low risk
