Efeitos climaticos na ocorrencia de Orthezia insignis Brwne, 1887 (Homoptera-Ortheziidae) em cafezais do Parana

The occurrence of the scale O. insignis as coffee tree pest was first noticed in 1970 attacking plantations in Parana State. The peculiarity of this occurrence was that it disappeared one month later without any insecticide control. We tried to explain that fact based on climatological records: rainfall, air temperature and water balance estimation (fig. 1A and B). This scale needs a dry period with high temperature to become a pest. This condition occurred only one time in six years (1964-1969). Other periods without rain had low temperature as limitant factor; or, when there was high temperature the limitant was rainfall. So we can say that, climatically, the probability of occurrence of O. insignis as a pest in very low
