Large scale rooting of softwood cuttings of Coffea arabica in Kenya, 1: Type of propagator choice of rooting medium and type of cuttings

Various aspects of vegetative propagation by means of softwood cuttings of Coffea arabica have been re-investigated through a number of rooting trials carried out science 1972. As a result efficient and inexpensive methods have been developed leading to over 90 well-rooted cuttings within 12 weeks. The best rooting compost consists of equal parts of loamy soil, coarse sand and acid swampsoil. A fairly low pH (5-6) is essential for good rooting. Split single-node cuttings root almost equally well as whole single-node cuttings. Trimming of the leaves should be avoided. A correct light intensity is essential for quick rooting and the shade netting held over the Lyamungu type propagator should allow about 20-30 of the total photosynthetically active radiation to reach the cuttings
