Bordeaux mixture. Past and present status in coffee plantations

The past and present status of Bordeaux mixture in the advisory schedule to control coffee diseases has been reviewed in detail. Three types of Bordeaux mixture, viz: alkaline, neutral and acidic, were advocated by different workers. The advisory on the alkaline Bordeaux mixture was based on the evidence of field experimentation on coffee while the other two were based on experience only. Detailed comparative studies between alkaline and neutral Bordeaux mixture showed the superior effect of the former in leaf rust control, retention of leaves, vigour of the plant and also prolonged persistence of copper in spray deposits during the natural weathering in the field. Release of copper from the spray deposits of alkaline Bordeaux mixture was slow during the process of weathering and this afforded a prolonged and effective protection to the sprayed leaves and twigs. Bordeaux mixture of alkaline reaction is therefore recommended to control the coffee diseases
