Wharehouse design for durable produce in the non-humid tropics with particular reference to coffee storage in Kenya

The author describes experiments to assess the effectiveness of traditional tropical warehouse design in producing a suitable environment for storing produce. The limitations of the traditional design are discussed, and some improved design ideas, which have shown promise when tested by means of scale models, are put forward. In particular, a double-skinned roof and controlled ventilation were found to be effective improvements. These design ideas are being incorporated (on a prototype basis) in a full-scale coffee warehouse near Nairobi, and the appropriate necessary modifications are outlined
