Fenología de alguns coleópteros nocivos ao cacaueiro no Espirito Santo, Brasil

The Chrysomelid beetle Maecolaspis ornata and the weevils Lordops aurosa, Naupactus bondari, Naupactus sp., and Lasiopus cilipes, are economically important in the cultivation of cacao in the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil, owing to the leaf damage they cause, which reduces tree photosynthesis with a consequent adverse effect on growth and fruit production. The object of the present study was to determine the geographic distribution of these coleopterous species, correlating their population fluctuations with climatic an vegetative data of the cacao tree, which would serve as the basis for an efficient, economic chemical control. The work was carried out on 8 cacao farms in the district of Linhares, Espirito Santo. Monthly population samples of 25 cacao trees were taken from each farm, using the knock-down method with 12 percent BHC, applying the insecticide on a rotational basis. The results showed that M. ornata was numerically the most important species, representing 64,3 percent of the total collection. Leaf flushing showed highly significant positive correlations with the population of M. ornata two months after its initiation while for L. aurosa they were positive and significant at the 5 percent level of probability, one and two months after. In the case of N. bondari, there was a significant, positive correlation in the same month. The total population, represented by the sum of the individual population of the five species, showed positive correlation in the same month, one month and most significantly two months after the initiation of leaf flushing. The results indicate that insecticides should be applied at the begininig of leaf flushing when the populations of these pests are at their lowest level.
