[Manejo de plantaciones de cacao bajo de la sombra de gliricidia]

HASFARM is one of the biggest plantation, enterprises in Indonesia. Its cocoa plantation in Jahab, East Kalimantan, started in 1978 with the establishment of seed orchards and basic facilities, and started large plantations after the 1982/83 drought in East Kalimantan. Scheduled for ana area of 12,000 ha of cocoa, the plantation is already now the largest contiguous cocoa plantation worldwide, covering and area of about 5000 ha. The entire plantation is established under G. sepium shade. Several timing schemes for establishment, land clearing methods and pruning intensities have been practiced. Under the given climate and radiation conditions the removal of 80 to 90 percent of the G. sepium trees is regarded as necessary as soon as the cocoa canopy is closed and the cocoa starts producing. A box design for lateral shade and protection from wind is left, with twin rows of G. sepium, 40-60 m apart. Implications for fertilizer input, pest control, and cocoa yield are discussed. Total above ground biomass of G. sepium at the time of shade removal is given.
