Controlling mirid bugs in cocoa
Cocoa is attacked by a wide range of insect pests but only mirids which are also known as capsids are economic pests throughout the main production areas of Central and South America, West Africa and Asia/Oceania. In spite of their small size these sap-sucking bugs are able to proliferate quickly to produce populations with the capacity to debilitate a mature tree to its death. A wide range of species are found throughout the world and this includes. Sahlbergella singularis and Distantiella theobromae in West Africa, Monalonion spp in South America and Helopeltis theobromae and Platyngomiriodes apiformis in South East Asia.
