Estudo do secador tubular tradicional da regiao cacaueira da Bahia

The results are presented of a two year study of traditional artificial drier used for cocoa in the Bahia Region of Brazil. The objective of the first year work was to obtain a complete understanding of the operating mechanisms of this type of drier. During the second year a sequence of modifications were implemented, the objective of which were twofold; to increase the efficiency of the drier while at the same time improving the quality of the dried cocoa. The operation of the drier has been studied under the following subheadings: a) low thermal efficiency of the furnace; b) Overheating of the furnace and heat exchange tube; c) Contamination of cocoa with smoke; d) Drying air flow movement; e) Disuniformity of the drying over the area of the drying floor; f) Heat transfer considerations. For each subheading practical recommendations are made and their effectiveness discussed.
