In 50 percent if 16 colonies of Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus forel, 1893 collected in cocoa plantations in Southern Bahia, Brazil, two or more queens were found. Hypotheses are discussed on the implications of polygyny, based on observation of the ovarian development of the females and these observations suggest the existence of an adaptative phenomenon increasing the colony potential.
