A survey of cocoa dryers in East New Britain

Industry in the past, especially the plantation industry, has relied heavily on being able to purchase imported diesel at low cost for drying produce. As oil prices have been increased, the cost of drying produce has become a greater component of the total production cost. In order to counteract these increases, fuel economy measures have been implemented, but eventually the diminishing returns dictate that a change to alternative fuel is necesary for survival. When wood, charcoal and diesel drying systems are compared, diesel has lost its former advantage in spite of the high thermal efficiencies which can be achieved, its convenience of handling and the degree of automation possible. Several measures have been recommended to improve the efficiency of combustion, and a Canadian energy combustion specialist examined the problem briefly, at the request of the E.P.U. (Energy Planning Unit of the Papua New Guinea Department of Minerals and Energy). After many years of experimentation the 'Waterwide Burner' has been perfected. To date no manufacturer has been able to equal the efficiency and savings that the 'Waterwide Burner' offers. Fuel savings and high efficiency by using solid waste as a fuel are its characteristics.
